I am back from Chiangmai!

hello guys!!! im finally back from chiangmai! it was a darn fun trip lah!! surprisingly, i didn't miss home, lol. or should i say, i wasn't homesick. a simple reflection on the trip.. (photos arent ready yet)

this trip made me realise what is teamwork, friendship and understanding. i shall talk about teamwork first. i finally understood why is teamwork important. it took us just 10 days to build up a house in Huay Zhongbo, Chiangrai. why is that so? the word is teamwork. some of us mixed the cement, some laid the bricks, some helped to move the bricks, some laid the roads and such.. it's never possible to do all these alone. while trying hard to get our work done, we also had fun throughout the trip.

next is friendship. got to know some good peeps there, especially those from my group, group 3. they are real great! im sure we'll still stay united as a team next time. at the same time, the real meaning of 有福同享,有难同当 is being made known to me. why do i say so? i've been through several hardships with my best buddy, adrian (or known as KC to me) in chiangmai. i shall name them out one by one..

the first one is on the first sunday we're there. we went to some sightseeing around the villages and after that went on to a local school to play basketball with them. since both of us weren't interested in basketball, we decided to play volleyball at the side instead, with some girls and some local students joined us thereafter. after the games it was time to go back to Huay Zhongbo. our team leader, dang, participated in the games and was perspiring like mad after that. since the van was crampy, he had to sit on the floor. he rested his elbow on my leg while the rest of his arm on adrian's leg. this made our shorts soaked in his sweat. both of us decided it was one of the 有难同当 we are going through, since only both of us got it.

the next is on the 2nd last day of work when only both of us were left to mix the cement at exactly noon time in the hot sun. drips of sweat formed on our heads and it went into the cement as it continues dripping. this was when he shouted "有福同享,有难同当!" and "we can do it" which motivated me to get the energy to do the work. this is also the time i realise that he's really a friend i can rely on in times of hardship since he did not let me face the hardship alone. since he gave me the motivation, i told him we should mix the cement till it's completely done, no matter how hot the sun is, no matter how tired we are, no matter how thirsty we are. halfway through mixing, drinks were offered and we rejected them, thinking of the promise we made to complete the cement making before taking a rest. although another person helped us with the cement, both of us did about 80% - 90% of the work and is very satisfied with it.

last is when we volunteered to go with one of the lecturers, mr ng to buy ingredients for steamboat that night at the Thailand - Myanmar border. once we set off, it started drizzling. the rain got heavier and heavier and in minutes our hair was wet. halfway through we got reminded that we need our passports just in case there's a spotcheck, therefore we turned back to the village to get our passports. this time we had a canvas covering us but it isn't of much help. however, we gave each other moral support and finally the ordeal was over for both of us.

a little known fact about this trip is that i fainted there on the first day of work. why? the story goes like this..

we had to fill up a small part of a dent-in grass field with soil but we had to pick out all the paper and stuff in there. seeing adrian alone in there picking up the stuff, i decided to lend him a helping hand. while trying to go down to the small little dent, i slipped and fell. trying to use my right hand to break the fall, i feel an enormous pain on my right arm so i decided to go and have a wash of hand. it felt more and more pain so i decided to join the team just in case anything happens to me so there are people to help me. once i went back, i felt very giddy and i held on to mr john lam, the lecturer in charge of our group. next thing i knew was i had a little flashback on some of the work we did in the morning. once i regained conciousness, i found out that many people were beside me. they kept asking me if im ok but i was very blur and did not really hear what they were saying. i got better after adrian asked if i am ok, probably because it's the voice im very familiar with.

i got carried to a temporary "sick bay" (which is the kitchen at the worksite) specially set up for me after i fainted. the lecturers came and have a look at me to ensure if i am ok. my hands felt very cold at that time and my face was pale. "tofu teacher" (a nickname which will be explained next time) gave me some "qigong" and i felt much better after that. adrian came in to have a look at me a few minutes later and asked me how was i. i asked him what happened and he just said i fainted when he turned over. more details will be explained next time...

this is a short summary of the trip, i'll be back with photos and such soon.. depends on when i'll get them all ready!
